In 2003, Malaika Early Learning Center opened as a special resource for children and families in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, offering high-quality childcare, child development and growth opportunities, beginning at infancy.   The organization opened with a fundamental commitment to implement research- and evidence-based best practices to educate and enrich children in an underserved neighborhood. Over the years, community demand and research into educational excellence drove Malaika to expand its kindergarten academic programming from one to two K4 and K5 classrooms in 2011. Currently, Malaika serves over 102 students from K4 to third grade, in many central ZIP codes, predominantly 53212, 53206, 53216, 53218 and 53208.

Malaika proposes to grow further now, through Great-by-8, a commitment to ensure that students can achieve reading proficiency by the end of the third grade in order to successfully learn in future grades.

Successful reading skills are non-negotiable for academic success. In order to ensure that children achieve this benchmark, Malaika is expanding its program by adding first through third grades by 2019. Malaika’s Great-by-8 model is an extension of our current program to address the continued development of each child’s solid academic and personal foundation
