Great-by-8

In 2003, Malaika Early Learning Center opened as a special resource for children and families in Milwaukee’s Harambee neighborhood, offering high-quality childcare, child development and growth opportunities, beginning at six weeks of age.   The early learning center opened with a fundamental commitment to implement practices to educate and enrich children in an underserved neighborhood. As community demand grew and research on the benefits of excellent early education developed, Malaika was called to expand its kindergarten academic programming from one to two K4 and K5 classrooms in 2011. Most recently, Malaika expanded to include first through third grade. Currently, Malaika serves over 102 students from K4 to third grade, in many central ZIP codes, predominantly 53212, 53206, 53216, 53218 and 53208.

Malaika proposes to grow further now, through Great-by-8, a commitment to ensure that students can achieve reading proficiency by the end of the third grade; to increase the success of learning in future grades. Malaika’s Great-by-8 model is an extension of our current program to address the continued development of each child’s solid academic and personal foundation.

As a result of the Federal Law AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act), all primary and secondary schools are required to develop and implement a plan for managing all building materials that contain asbestos. Included in the AHERA Act is the requirement to notify all parents, guardians, and staff members as well as organizations representing them, of activities and events with the asbestos-containing building materials annually. In compliance with the federal Asbestos Hazardous Emergency Response Act (AHERA), Malaika Early Learning Center will provide information on inspection reports upon request.
